About the D&D Initiative Tracker
This initiative tracker helps Dungeon Masters manage combat encounters in D&D 5th Edition. It sorts combatants by initiative roll, tracks whose turn it is, monitors hit points, and counts rounds automatically.
How to Use the Initiative Tracker
- Add each combatant (players and monsters) with their name, initiative roll, and max HP
- The tracker automatically sorts by initiative (highest first)
- Click "Next Turn" to advance to the next combatant and automatically track rounds
- Select a combatant and use the Damage/Heal controls to modify HP
- Combatants at 0 HP are marked as down
Initiative Rules in D&D 5e
At the start of combat, each combatant makes a Dexterity check (d20 + Dexterity modifier) to determine their place in the initiative order. Combatants take turns in order from highest to lowest initiative. When everyone has taken a turn, the round ends and a new round begins with the same initiative order.
Tips for Running Combat
- Pre-roll monster initiative to save time at the table
- Group identical monsters on the same initiative count
- Use the round counter to track duration-based spells and effects
- Keep combat moving by having the next player ready before their turn
